I recently ran a model call for a maternity photo session in Basingstoke. The aim was to expand my maternity portfolio. I cannot tell you how much I have missed those sessions. It was lovely to photograph mums to be and to see them glow 🙂
Before any of my sessions, whether it’s a maternity, newborn or family photo session I always get in touch with clients to make sure they have all the details and are reassured I have taken care of everything. My client welcome pack is packed with advice and helpful tips. One of the most important topics I go through with my clients is clothing. The most important thing for me is to make sure you feel comfortable during the session. All preparation that goes behind the scenes is to reduce any of the unnecessary stress and help you pick outfits that represent you! I have even created a Pinterest board to give my clients ideas too!
Here are a few tips on what to wear for a maternity photo session.
Start with what you love
There is nothing better than to wear something you love! Do you have a favourite colour that you love to wear? Make sure you wear it! Do you love pretty dresses? Wear one! I would love you to find something that makes you feel beautiful! During maternity, you naturally glow and wearing something special will make you feel amazing.
Colour palette
When I speak to my clients I recommend having at least three colours in your palette. You could also add in a couple of patterns. This would look nice too! Remember, the key is to coordinate, so the colours in your prints and patterns sit well together.
Layering
I believe that adding a layer to your outfit can provide visual interest. It also allows for a lot more variety in your shots and poses. Add a cardigan or a jacket and you have an entirely different look. Layering can work beautifully with your bump too and beautifully draw the attention to it.
Coordinating vs matching
I am a believer that coordinating is far better than matching. Choose colours that look nice together, but remember that you don’t need to wear the same grey shirt! You will do great if you add interest to your photos and incorporate plenty of colour and or patterns.
Be timeless
Pick outfits that aren’t considered too trendy, but will be able to be enjoyed and displayed for many years to come.
Accessorise
Adding some accessories can also really add the ‘wow’ factor to any outfit and can really make your photos “YOU! Think about adding a necklace or scarf to your outfit. For family think of adding a jacket, belt, hat, headband, etc. Accessories are a fantastic way to give a finishing touch to your look.
So here are some simple tips on what to wear for a maternity photo session. I honestly think if you follow the above you will look beautiful during your session and will be able to focus on your partner/family and love you have for each other.
Till next time
