If you have recently welcomed a new arrival into the world – congratulations! Your life, without a doubt, will definitely change for good for now on (for the better!). Now is also a perfect time to get in touch with your local photographer to book a newborn baby photo session. Having a newborn baby photo session is so rewarding and you will cherish those photographs for years to come. If you, however, are all ready and your photo session is booked I have prepared this article for you – so that you can prepare yourselves to make you look your best on your newborn baby photo shoot.
Comfort
The most important thing for you is to feel comfortable during your newborn photo session. Wear something that won’t restrict your movement. If you are breastfeeding find a dress or a nice top that you can easily adjust. It’s best to keep it comfortable but still natural.
Confidence
How to be confident during a session? You decided to have a session so you are already halfway there! Have you also thought about what you wear can influence your confidence? What if you buy something just before the session and you put it on for the first time and suddenly realise this outfit doesn’t match your partners or that you just don’t feel right in this new outfit?
Advice? Sometimes it is worth wearing something you had for x amount of years, but you know you will feel comfortable in this outfit and it has never disappointed you. By doing so, this will allow you to feel confident in what you’re wearing during the shoot.
Matching colours – but not the same – mix it up!
You can choose a leading colour for everyone in the session, for example, you can wear a blue dress, your partner a blue checked shirt and children have blue accessories. Additionally, you can add another colour which matches your leading colour. Your clothes also don’t have to have the same shade, mix it up and try different combinations. At the end of the day, I want you to feel comfortable.
Natural colours such as creams, whites, greys and light blues also work well during a newborn baby photo session as they create calm, natural tones.
Accessories
Accessories can add an interesting element to the photo but watch out not to overdo them. During a newborn baby photo session, my aim is to focus on the baby. Accessories such as delicate earrings on you or a hairband/clip on your older daughter (if you have older children) will be plenty. You can also have a little headband on your newborn or we can use lovely patterned swaddle for some pictures.
Less means more
Patterns that are very bold and dominant might distract, so if you do like lots of patterns think whether all of you should be dressed like that. Minimalism maybe the best solution.
Writing
Similar to the point above, t-shirts with bold, large, text elements can distract your eye from what is important in the photo – the connection between you and your baby. The idea is you want this to be the story of the photo, and not people becoming distracted by trying to read what is on your t-shirt!
That said, t-shirts with subtle motifs are typically fine. As the previous point suggests, less is often more in this respect.
Cartoon characters
If you have older children I know how much children love cartoons! During the session however we want the newborn baby and children to be the centre of attention. Again, prints of cartoon characters might drag away attention from you and your children – the biggest superheroes of the day.
Capturing the details
If you are thinking about dressing your newborn baby, have an outfit ready that won’t cover their hands and feet. I love capturing those tiny newborn baby details and I wouldn’t want to miss them if they are tucked away. I love capturing moments when you hold their tiny hands and gently tickle their feet.
That’s all! I genuinely hope these 8 tips on what to wear for your newborn baby photo shoot will make your preparation fun and easy! Check out my newborn baby gallery too! My clients are doing an amazing job and they always look stunning. YOU and YOUR family will look LOVELY too.
Till next time
